Black in National Parks Week (annually in August)

Founded in August 2020 by Nicole Jackson, Black In National Parks Week is a week-long celebration and awareness campaign dedicated to highlighting the contributions, experiences, and cultural heritage of Black individuals in national parks. It typically features a series of events, activities, and initiatives aimed at increasing awareness, representation, and engagement of the Black community in these natural spaces. The week seeks to foster a sense of belonging, inspire future generations, and advocate for greater equity and inclusion in the national park system.

The Black in National Parks Story Project

Created in February 2021, The Black in National Parks Story Project aims to amplify the voices and experiences of Black individuals visiting national parks. Through storytelling and online community engagement, we seek to highlight the rich history, cultural significance, and personal connections that Black people have with these natural public spaces. By sharing these stories, we hope to inspire greater participation, representation, and advocacy for engagement from the Black community within the U.S. national park system.
